The BBC quiz show Only Connect goes out of its way to be difficult and nerdy. For its first three series, the "question labels" were the first six letters in the Greek alphabet: alpha, beta, gamma and so on. At the start of Series 4, presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell announced that because viewers had complained that this was too pretentious, they were being replaced ... by Egyptian hieroglyphs.
All six hieroglyphs are used in rounds One and Two; only the lion and water are used in Round 3 (the Connecting Wall).
